The Route

Following the oldest trade route on earth.

The frankincense and myrrh trails through the Ethiopian highlands predate written history, and the growers we work with here still tap the trees using methods passed down largely unchanged.

We spend time on community projects with local growers between highland towns, and the trip closes, as it should, with coffee grown a short walk from where we tap the resin.

This is a dry-season route, chosen for the clarity of the light across the highlands as much as for practical trekking conditions.

The Itinerary

Roughly how it goes.

Day 1–3

Addis Ababa to the highlands

Travel out from Addis into the highlands, acclimatising and meeting the growers' cooperative.

Day 4–8

The frankincense trails

Walk the old trading routes between highland towns, visiting resin-tapping sites and community projects.

Day 9–11

Myrrh country

Continue toward the myrrh-producing regions, staying with host families throughout.

Day 12–14

Coffee & return

A final few days around a coffee-growing cooperative before the journey back to Addis.
